African sculpture stands out not only for its aesthetic beauty, but also for its function in the abstraction of the concept it represents. For many Africans, sculptures are the incarnation of ancestors. They are symbols that transmit their vital strength to the community. They have nothing to do with fetishes. The most important two points in the sculpture, are the head and the navel. In the head concentrates the spiritual energy, and the navel is the link between mother and child. The carver has to purify himself before entering into the forest, to choose the most appropiate wood, to pray to the spirit of the tree, and to carve the sculpture.
